CORNER BROOK Herald Magazine ranks Corner Brook as the best place in Atlantic Canada for active living.
The magazine looked at population, real estate trends and amenities in communities across Atlantic Canada and picked its top five places to live based on characteristics that appeal to different people.
Halifax’s north end was determined top overall in the article, which appeared on the Chronicle Herald’s website Saturday.
“Corner Brook was a natural fit for active living, and our choice was confirmed once we spoke with recreation officials about what’s available in the city and nearby,” said The Chronicle Herald’s south shore bureau chief, Beverly Ware, in an email.
“Key … were the natural and manmade recreational opportunities, and the fact I’ve spoken with people who have skied there and they say the tourism sector caters to them far better than in other places they’ve visited.”
The article highlights Victoria Gillespie, a recreation management graduate from Acadia University, who lives in Corner Brook. The 24-year-old is a downhill skier who enjoys amenities such as Marble Mountain, the scenic Humber Valley, zip lining and the new high-rope course at Marble.
Other outdoor activities mentioned include hiking, mountain biking, snowshoeing, rafting and salmon fishing on the Humber River and exploring underground caves. It also references cross-country skiing, and the upcoming national ski championships and the trail network and swimming area along the Corner Brook Stream Trail.
The Pepsi Centre, with its ice rinks and year-round indoor sports amenities, also received a mention.
Corner Brook is also known for its deep water port and proximity to the Deer Lake airport. The article states the average home costs $205,291 and the average income is $80,879.
The other categories and the places determined best are: for retirement living, Stratford, P.E.I., Saint John, N.B. for information technology, Bridgewater, N.S. for young families, and North-end Halifax for best urban living.
