Earlier this week Corner Brook MHA Gerry Byrne said there is money out there should the City of Corner Brook decide to proceed with building a pool. But Mayor Charles Pender said the funding sources, in particular from federal programs, don’t mean anything if the province doesn’t step up to say it’s willing to contribute.
Pender also maintains building and operating a pool would have to be a regional effort.
Mercer said he’d like to know the definition of a regional project and what is wanted in terms of regional input to make the project a reality.
“What is it you need from the adjacent municipalities … what commitments are you looking for from these municipalities?”
He said a regional project could be as minimal as the surrounding municipalities saying they don’t want to build a pool in the foreseeable future. So, Corner Brook can go ahead and build a pool and they won’t compete with it for the funding that’s out there.
Mercer also wonders what adjacent municipalities are being referenced and if one doesn’t want to be involved, does it have a veto to stop the project.
