DEER LAKE Meghan House took fourth place over the weekend in the Miss Canada Globe competition in Toronto.
The 20-year-old said it was a tough event to take part in, with competition high among the other contestants.
But she said she performed all the events to the best of her abilities and managed the fourth-place finish among more than 20 other ladies in her category.
Because House finished in the top five, it now means she will be working with the Miss Canada Globe for the next year, attending other competitions and various fundraising activities. She was the only contestant from this part of the province, with another Newfoundlander from the St. John’s area also taking part.
“I’m just thrilled. I’m just so happy with how I did, I couldn’t believe it,” she said over the phone.
“I got a lot of support from home and that makes it even better.”
House signed up for the event last year, heading around to various local businesses collecting sponsors. She hopes to study social work for a future career but for now, she said, she’ll honour her new obligations as an international contestant.
Her top-five victory means she’ll get to compete at the international level of the Miss Globe Pageant next year, as one of five Canadian contestants. She’ll have to take part in at least two events per month in the next year and if she does win another title, another year could be added onto her schedule.
“It’s a commitment, but it’s one that I really don’t mind,” she said. “My plan is to still study social work eventually, but I really want to see this through, see where I can go with it.”
Miss Canada Globe was founded 13 years ago with a purpose of acclaiming women from all over the country to represent Canada at various international pageants, such as Miss Globe and Miss Teen Worldwide. House said being from a rural area, she was impressed that she was treated just as well as contestants from Toronto or Montreal, and that anyone could have won.
“It really was something that anyone could do, doesn’t matter where you’re from or who you are,” she said. “Even contestants from small areas can accomplish big things, that’s what I took away from this.”
House is still waiting word as to the next competition or event in which she will take part. For now she’ll bask in her pageant glory.
