Joy Burt headed to provincial sports hall of fame

World-class powerlifter and soccer star Joy Burt of Corner Brook is among six people selected for induction into the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame.

Joy Burt of Corner Brook, who placed on the podium at the world stage in powerlifting during her career in the 1980s and 1990s, has been named one of six inductees into the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame.

Also known for her prowess on the soccer pitch, Burt progressed from being a provincial and national powerlifting champion in her weight class to placing on the podium at the world powerlifting championships.

From 1996-2011, Burt held the world record in the dead lift until the weight classes changed in 2011.

A star soccer player with Memorial University, she was the first woman inducted into that sport's provincial hall of fame.

The other inductees include George (Bow) Collier in the athlete/veteran category for  soccer;  Christopher Facey in the athlete/builder category for athletics and soccer; George LeFeuvre in the builder category for cross-country skiing; Paul McCloy in the athlete category for athletics; and Debby Power in the athlete category for softball, ball hockey and ice hockey.
