A 21-year-old man charged with mugging an elderly woman in the Kelsey Drive area Sunday afternoon made his first appearance, albeit brief, in provincial court in St. John's Monday.

Bradley Steiner is facing a charge of robbery with violence in connection with the incident, which is said to have happened near the Dollarama store around 12:30 p.m. Steiner is alleged to have pushed the woman to the ground before snatching her purse and running away.

He was located shortly afterward by members of the RNC, with the help of a police dog.

The woman received minor injuries.

Crown prosecutor Jennifer Colford opposed Steiner's release when he appeared in court Monday afternoon, and he consented to remain in custody until his case is called again Aug. 15.
