The Southwest Coast SPCA’s board of directors hopes it is one step closer to realizing its dream of building a permanent shelter now that it has become a registered charity.
Diane Simon, president of the organization, said up to now the group has a total of about $80,000 in a building account which was raised through a Go Fund Me effort after a fire in March of 2015 where more than 20 of their cats perished.

The organization has now struck a sub-committee renewing the effort, which is at the beginning stages of reaching out to the community for donations, but also asking companies to donate materials and supplies to help them build.
Simon said service groups are also being asked to help them share their vision of a new shelter, which they hope to start in the spring of 2018.
Due to its new registered charity status, receipts for income tax purposes can be issued for donations of $25 or higher.
The commitment is to continue rescuing and helping strays, abandoned and sometimes neglected animals in the area and move on their dream of building a permanent shelter.
