Just days after police indicated a report of threats against a school in Corner Brook was likely just rumour, an 18-year-old has been charged with uttering a death threat to students and staff of Corner Brook Regional High School.

The young man made a brief appearance in provincial court in Corner Brook on the single charge against him Tuesday afternoon.

He was released with a surety and will have to abide with certain conditions of his release. He will be subject to a curfew and must stay away from not just the city high school, but also from University Drive, where the school is located.

He had his next court appearance set for April 17.

According to information filed with the court, the threat was made March 20. In a press release issued Tuesday, the RNC said it never received a report about the threat until Monday and the charge was laid Tuesday.

Last week, The Western Star had asked the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District about a letter that had been sent home to parents and guardians regarding rumours that someone had threatened the school.

The school district said Friday it had not been advised by police of any credible threat.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary confirmed it was conducting an investigation Friday, but declined to comment on the details. Instead, it directed The Western Star to a Facebook post by the RNC in St. John’s regarding a similar situation at a school in Conception Bay South.

The Facebook post by the police essentially warned against spreading rumours that had not been confirmed as coming from a valid source.
