Winter stores of meat and preserves would have dwindled by the end of February, when the weather was harsh outside. Even salted fish stocked prior to the onset of the cold season would be running low.
Rationing was not uncommon until the ocean harvests returned and summer gardens could help resupply family coffers and cellars. But, that was 50 years ago, when people fed themselves with copious hard work. With changing lifestyles and the advent of food banks and the like, few are left rationing nowadays.
On the Bay of Islands lower north shore, food and family fun was plentiful last weekend and will be found in ample quality again this weekend, as end-of-winter feasting continues at carnival events slated for McIvers and Cox’s Cove.
Banquets, like that held at the McIvers community hall last Sunday and another party — a pizza night set for local teens at Corner Brook’s Centre Bowl — were put together to honour some 100 hometown volunteers who had contributed to the overwhelming success of the town’s homecoming committee fundraiser from last year known as Chase the Ace.
Last weekend, people from McIvers and Cox’s Cove gathered for the seventh annual Larkin’s Pond Family Fun Fishing Derby. Winners catching the biggest fish included Jenica Wells-Park, Rhianna Crocker, Jenny George and Cassy White in the children’s division, and Brock Park, Cindy Park and Ted Park in the adult competition category.
McIvers is heading into its second winterfest weekend Friday. There will be snacking on canteen delights offered during an open 2 p.m. card game at the community hall, and filling up on 30 games of merchandise prize bingo due to take place there 8 o’clock that night.
Come Saturday morning, a big community breakfast is planned to get folks stoked for a slate of outdoor children’s events around the town that day. McIvers follows up that evening with its ever-popular carnival talent night.
The cove
Just four miles down the road, there’s a little something for everyone as well. The sponsoring Cox’s Cove Culture Committee and its partner organizations are offering a slate of weekend events that runs through Sunday.
The fun starts with an open, prize-packed card game, beginning 8 p.m. Friday at the local senior citizen’s clubhouse.
There’s breakfast at the seniors hall Saturday from 9-11 a.m., followed in the afternoon by children’s activities that include an egg hunt and scavenger hunt starting at noon.
The afternoon includes a fire-lighting contest and marshmallow roast, snowshoe racing, tugs-of-war, and basket races.
Family skating is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Marshall Moore Arena, with hotdogs and hot chocolate being served at 4 p.m., after a day of judged snowsculpturing, facepainting and colouring contests.
Saturday concludes with a carnival darts tournament, due to start at 6:30 p.m.
On Sunday, children and children at heart are expected to join in the fun of a sliding party on the hill at Dale’s Field.
