Paige Hickey may be the youngest in the family, but she has already discovered if you put in the practice time anything is possible.

At 12, she has been playing golf for seven years and has already staked claim as one of the top female golfers in the province in her age group.

She wants to show her siblings she can compete with them as part of the friendly challenges they have from time to time. She’s particularly interested in piling up some wins against her sister Abigail.

Spending every hour she can on the golf course — a place where she finds fun with her friends — is why she feels her game can only get better.

She suggests people who don’t want to punch the hours to improve their skill set but want to play anyway should really just play for the fun of it. For those who want to be among the best, it takes practice, she said.

“If you really, really want to win something you have to be up on the course practising all the time,” Paige said.

It’s hard to argue with her if you look at how she has done on the 2014 Tely Junior Golf Tour.

Her commitment to getting in every swing shows with her winning six bantam girls crowns on the Tour this summer.

The one Tour stop that doesn’t show her at the top of the leaderboard was the Corner Brook Junior Invitational at Blomidon where she had to withdraw because of illness.

Being afforded a chance to travel and check out some of the cool golf courses in the province has been a blast for her. She is having fun and likes being part of an event that makes her feel special.

Paige admits golf can become frustrating from time to time so it requires some patience, but she insists the best thing a golfer can do is remember it’s only a shot and believe the next one will hit the mark. Being calm and collected is what she feels could mean a stroke or two in her favour and that’s all that may be required in a close tournament.

Contentment comes to her on the golf course, and she really would like some of her friends to give it a whirl someday because she believes they are missing out.

“You got to be focused, but once you get the hang of it then it’s really fun,” she said.
