Keisha Brown excited about rowing into unchartered waters

Keisha Brown is happy she found a group of girls who happen to catch the rowing bug like herself. Brown is the captain of the K Team — a women’s rookie rowing squad based out of Corner Brook that will make its race debut Saturday at the Humber Valley Regatta in Brake’s Cove.

Keisha Brown is no stranger to competitive sports so it only made sense for her to check out something new when somebody put the idea in her head.

Brown, a former Corner Brook Youth Bowling Canada winner of a gold and silver medal on the national stage, is now poised to see how she can handle herself in a boat with a group of her friends as a women’s rookie rowing crew with the Humber Valley Rowing Club.

Always open to new challenges, Brown was able to recruit a handful of girls to join her on the water. The team had hoped to make its rowing debut at the Royal St. John’s Regatta earlier this month, but by the time they had everybody on board Brown didn’t think there was enough time to put in the training.
The crew, which goes by the name K Team, has been active on the water since the end of June and Brown figures they are ready to have some fun at the Humber Valley Regatta Saturday at Brake’s Cove.
All the girls have punched a lot of time preparing for the regatta and having fun while doing so and that’s all that matters, according to Brown, but don’t think for a second it’s just about showing up and saying ‘they did it.”
“It’s mostly for the experience and just having fun, but we’re all determined and we worked hard for this so hopefully it all pays off, but if not then there’s always next year,” Brown said.
The K Team, with Jeff Griffin as coxswain, also includes Jasmine Strickland of Corner Brook, Jessie Chaulk of Humber Village, Denika Kelly of Pasadena, Mackenzie Miles of Corner Brook and Shelley Drover of Corner Brook.
K Team will make its debut in a showdown against Nexxbar in Race 3 starting at 11:30 a.m. at dockside in Brake’s Cove. For a complete race schedule and list of team members for all entries see today’s Scoreboard Page 10.
