When Perry Alexander sent a ball sailing over the Jubilee Field fence in the second inning to put the Veitch’s Ultramar Hawks up 5-1, someone in the West Side Monarchs outfield yelled to teammates, “there’s a lot of game left.”

Obviously the rest of the Monarchs were listening, as they rallied back to eventually earn an 11-8 win in the Corner Brook Molson Senior Baseball League matchup, mainly thanks to a five-run outburst in the top of the seventh inning.

Aaron Sheppard scored twice and added a pair of RBIs in the win, while Rob Park went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Alexander wound up with three RBIs and two runs scored in a 2-for-2 effort overall. Mike Simms managed a 3-for-4 stat line with two runs in the loss.

Tyler Gardner’s six innings of work earned him the win, despite giving up eight runs (five earned) on 11 hits, with six strikeouts and four walks. Matt Prosper picked up the save in one inning of three-up, three-down work.

Frank Humber gave up three runs on four hits in a brief appearance on the mound, which was enough to get tagged with the loss. He struck out one batter. Garrett Anderson went 6.1 innings, walking seven batters and allowing eight runs (seven earned) on six hits. He struck out four.
