Buckle, McNeil top respective divisions at Travelers Provincial Curling Club Championships

Bas Buckle is no stranger to victories on the curling ice, but he reintroduced himself yet again on Thursday during opening day action from the Travelers Provincial Curling Club Championships at the Corner Brook Curling Club.

The Buckle rink — also featuring Terry Oke, Nicholas O’Neill and Gary Chaulk — stands atop the division at 2-0 after registering a 10-6 victory over Dave Thomas of the Gateway Curling Club and an 8-5 triumph over Steve Routledge of St. John’s.

Other scores from the men’s division on Thursday were: Mike Mullins (Corner Brook) 4, Andrew Symonds (St. John’s) 1; Routledge 10, Rod Feltham (Gander) 1; Symonds 7, Thomas 1; and Feltham 9, Mullins 3.

Action resumes 1 p.m. today.

 

Women’s division

The Caribou Curling Club’s Sherri McNeil rink — which also consists of Marcheta Gallant, Sherri Kinsman and Susan Pilgrim — are unbeaten in two matches so far on the ladies’ side.

An opening-match 8-3 victory over Corner Brook Curling Club’s Jean Rockwell rink set the tone for a follow-up 10-5 win against Corner Brook’s Louise Gaslard.

The following are scores from other action in the women’s division on Thursday: Gaslard 7, Samantha Kent (St. John’s) 4; Kelly Cribb-Mitchell (Grand Falls-Windsor) 4, Wendy Dunne (St. John’s) 0; Dunne 15, Kent 6; and Rockwell 8, Cribb-Mitchell 5.

Action resumes 9 a.m. today.
