Mariners take touch football title

Marine Lounge quarterback Harry Patterson struggled on Saturday, throwing three interceptions, but the most costly pick was tossed by his Golden Gophers’ counterpart, Steve Hynes.

Robert Wheeler picked off Hynes and ran it back for a score, the lone touchdown of the contest, as the Mariners knocked off the Gophers 9-0 in the Corner Brook Coors Light Touch Football League championship game at Wellington Street Sports Complex.

The interception was one of two for Wheeler on the day.

Steve Huxter kicked three rouges to bump the score up to nine.

Hynes was better defensively for the Gophers than offensively, as he hauled in a pair of picks himself. Michael Tavenor had the other interception on Patterson. Pete McDonald registered two sacks.

The league’s single-day playoff began with a tilt between the Pirates and Raiders, where two touchdowns from Greg Whelan powered the Pirates to a 13-8 decision. Mark Gillis caught both scoring throws.

Matt Roache connected with Colin Dunphy for the only touchdown for the Raiders, as they were eliminated.

Next up, quarterback Josh Skinner used his legs instead of his feet to rush in the game’s only score as the Falcons edged the Broncos 8-6.

Broncos quarterback Ryan Barry threw a touchdown to Peter Rose, but was picked off four times in the season-ending loss.

The Pirates then played Marine Lounge in a semifinal game, which the Mariners won easily 20-6.

Patterson found Adam Anderson and Steve Perry through the air for touchdowns, and also ran one in.

Greg Whelan threw a touchdown to Mike McPhee, but that was all the Pirates could muster.

In the other semifinal, the Golden Gophers blasted the Falcons 28-6.
