Ryan Meade picked up a goal and an assist to lead the Corner Brook Royals to a 5-1 victory over the Port aux Basques Mariners Friday night at the Corner Brook Civic Centre.

Goaltenders Brad Power of the Royals and Scotty Francis of the Mariners were busy most of the night and had to make some key saves in the early going, but the Royals took command of the game in the second period after Tommy Ryan scored a power-play marker at 10:17 of the middle period.

Ian Pilgrim, Jamie Penney and Tyler Hunt also scored for the Royals.

Penney’s marker came in the second period with his team playing short-handed to give the Royals a two-goal cushion that they would protect the rest of the way.

Tristan Butt was the lone marksman for the Mariners, burying a hard snapshot over the glove hand of Power from the top of the slot late in the second period.

The two teams will tangle again Saturday night 7:30 p.m. at the Bruce II Sports Centre in Port aux Basques.
