Chris Dobbin didn’t see eye-to-eye with coach Peter Benoite and he struggled to balance academics with athletics.

That’s all the Corner Brook native was willing to say about his decision to leave the team and focus his attention on his education closer to the friendly confines of home.

He will continue working towards a bachelor of earth science degree when he attends Grenfell Campus in the fall of this year and shooting around the basketball doesn’t appear to be on his radar for the immediate future.

A multi-sport athlete who has starred on the national scene on a number of occasions in different sports, Dobbin is now ready to play some meaningful baseball again.

Dobbin hasn’t played a game of baseball since he was a peewee player in the Corner Brook minor baseball system, but he’s been working as a coach for the minor program for the past two years and being around the field has motivated him to play senior baseball with the Wing ’N It Marlins and try to earn a berth on the Corner Brook Junior Barons.

He walked away from baseball as a teenager because he wanted to commit fully to one sport and that was basketball because he wanted to play varsity basketball when he graduated from high school.

He’s eager to find out what he missed.

“Oh man, I haven’t played in six or seven year’s. I’m excited,” Dobbin, who will turn 20 on June 7, said Monday afternoon. “I started coaching at the field last year and being out there all the time and watching the senior games it made me miss it a lot so I figured I’d try to get myself back out there and see what I can do.”

Dobbin made his senior league debut Sunday afternoon with the Marlins, playing right field for every inning except the first one in an 11-6 victory.

“I was a little bit nervous, but that’s natural. Overall, I’m happy to get back out there,” he said.
