Some people hang up the cleats, but there’s always a new face or two around the diamond every year so the Corner Brook women’s softball setup continues to forge ahead.

The Corner Brook Molson Ladies Softball League will feature a four-team league when the season opens June 4 at Ambrose O’Reilly Memorial Field in Corner Brook.

League president Kathy Lukeman said all teams will hold some open practices all this week to have a good look at their respective rosters and get in shape for a season that will be highlighted by the local league playing host to the 2018 provincial women’s softball championship this summer.

The defending champion KSAB Rangers, who ousted Whelan’s Gate in Game 7 of the best-of-seven final one year ago, will be joined by the West Side Monarchs and Rapid Power Sports Bees.

The league will play its regular season schedule at Ambrose O’Reilly Memorial Field, but any rained out games will be scheduled for Tuesday nights 9 p.m. at Fred Basha Memorial Park to ensure the schedule isn’t affected by games postponed because of inclement weather.

Corner Brook was scheduled to host the provincial women’s softball championship last season but it got cancelled after teams from the St. John’s women’s softball circuit refused to send teams to the west coast.

This wasn’t the news the local women’s league wanted to hear, but Lukeman said Dave Feener of Softball Newfoundland and Labrador has addressed the subject with officials with the St. John’s league and they have given him a firm commitment that they will be sending teams to Corner Brook this year. More importantly, it is expected to be the biggest female provincial tournament held in the city because there will be a new entry at this year’s provincials with St. Anthony committed to travelling to Corner Brook.

Anybody interested in playing women’s softball this summer are encouraged to attend one of the open workouts scheduled for Ambrose O’Reilly this week.

The league opens its regular schedule June 4 with the Rangers clashing with Whelan’s Gate 6:30 p.m. at Ambrose O’Reilly Memorial Field.
