Province’s athletic best of 2016, new Hall of Famers honoured

Sport Newfoundland and Labrador revealed its annual provincial award winners for 2016 and inducted three new members into its Hall of Fame during a banquet Saturday night at the Sheraton Hotel in St. John’s. Among those recognized and honoured were (from left) Harold Walters, representing the Brad Gushue curling rink (team of the year), Hall of Fame inductees Glenn Stanford, Rod Snow and Gerald Lomond and baseball player Heather Healey (senior female athlete of the year); back row: Todd Hickey, representing para-athlete Liam Hickey (junior male athlete of the year), soccer’s Shayne Dunphy (volunteer of the year), track and field athlete Camryn Bonia (junior female athlete of the year), rugby’s John Cowan (executive of the year), wrestling’s Noel Strapp (coach of the year) and baseball’s Ryan Garland (official of the year).

The winners:

• Senior Female Athlete of the Year: Heather Healey (baseball)

• Senior Male Athlete of the Year: Sean Cleary (softball)

• Junior Female Athlete of the Year: Camryn Bonia (athletics)

• Junior Male Athlete of the Year: Liam Hickey (wheelchair basketball/sledge hockey)

• Executive of the Year Award: John Cowan (rugby)

• Volunteer of the Year: Shane Dunphy (soccer)

• Coach of the Year: Noel Strapp (wrestling)

• Team of the Year: Team Gushue (curling)

• Official of the Year: Ryan Garland (baseball)

SNL also paid tribute to three 2017 Hall of Fame inductees, previously announced, as part of the gala event with an official induction ceremony. The new members of the Hall are Gerald Lomond (builder category, gymnastics); Rod Snow (athlete category, rugby) and Glenn Stanford (athlete-builder category, soccer/basketball/hockey)
