Thanks to Hannah Connolly, the Island Orthotics Curling Rangers are back on top of the Corner Brook Women’s Soccer League.

The ladies in blue defeated the Under-18s 1-0 in extra time Wednesday night at the Wellington Street Sports Complex, with Connolly supplying the golden goal.

Following 90 minutes of scoreless play and about four minutes of the first five-minute overtime period, Connolly bulged the twine behind Under-18s goalkeeper Emma Mugford to send her teammates racing towards her in celebration.

Rangers goalie Ashley Preston recorded the clean sheet at the other end of the field.

It was the first and only loss of the season for the Under-18s, who posted a 12-0-2 record to finish in first place after the regular season. The Rangers were in second at 11-1-2.

The Under-18s then beat the Rangers earlier in the playoffs, a result that sent the young squad directly to the final. The Rangers then had to defeat Clancy’s FC to book their spot in the championship game.

In last year’s final, the Under-18s blanked the Rangers 1-0.
