Rangers win women's soccer league championship

The showdown between the top two teams in the Corner Brook Women’s Soccer League turned out to be a letdown.

The Island Orthotics Curling Rangers struck four times in the first half en route to a 7-0 triumph over Clancy’s Soccer Club to win the league championship at Wellington Street Sports Complex on Saturday.

It’s the second league title in a row for the Rangers.

Hannah Connolly and Katie Montevecchi were the Rangers two leading goalscorers, respectively, in the regular season and both responded in the big game with two-goal efforts. Erin McNeil also found the back of the net twice, while Sam Meaney added a single marker.

Ashley Preston kept the clean sheet between the pipes for the Rangers.

The game was just two minutes old when Montevecchi scored what turned out to be the game-winner. She followed that up with another goal in the 20th minute to put her side up by two.

Nine minutes later, Connolly produced her first of the evening, before Meaney struck in the 44th minute to make it a 4-0 game at half-time.

Connolly notched her second in the 49th minute, with McNeil adding a pair in the 54th and 59th minutes to put the game well out of reach for their Stephenville-based opponents.

In the third-place game earlier on Saturday, regular season scoring champion Jade Regular supplied the game’s only goal as the Shoppers Drug Mart Hawks blanked the Under-18s 1-0.

Regular’s marker came in the 57th minute.

Amanda Parsons recorded the clean sheet in goal.
